Army Busts Ammunition Smuggling Syndicate

In a significant victory against criminal networks involved in the illicit arms trade, the Nigerian Army has successfully intercepted a truckload of ammunition destined for Anambra state. Acting on intelligence information, troops conducted a strategic Stop and Search operation along the Ajilete-Owode Road in Yewa North LGA of Ogun State, leading to the discovery and seizure of the illegal consignment.

According to a statement issued by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the truck with the registration number ENU 697 XY was found to be loaded with a staggering amount of ammunition. The seized haul included 720 packets of Red Star Cartridges of 12 Calibre, with each packet containing 25 cartridges, resulting in a total of 18,000 cartridges. Additionally, the truck held 250 packets of live (black) cartridges, with 10 packets per packet, amounting to a total of 2,500 cartridges of the same calibre.

The operation did not stop at confiscating the contraband; it also led to the arrest of two individuals believed to be part of the ammunition smuggling syndicate. The suspects have been identified as Mr. Eric Seworvor, a Ghanaian national, and the truck’s driver, Mr. Lukman Sani. Both are now in custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations. Further findings have revealed that the ammunition, cunningly concealed within the seemingly empty truck, was illegally imported from Mali through the Idiroko International Border. Its ultimate destination was the city of Onitsha in Anambra State, where the illegal weaponry was intended to be delivered.

The Nigerian Army is committed to combating security challenges and maintaining peace and order within the country. Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu urged all law-abiding citizens to continue supporting the troops and other security agencies by providing credible information. Such assistance is crucial in ensuring the success of operations targeting criminal networks involved in arms trafficking and other illicit activities.

The interception of this ammunition smuggling attempt underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to securing the nation and protecting its citizens from the threats posed by illegal arms. The proliferation of weapons not only fuels violent crimes but also exacerbates conflicts and jeopardizes the safety and stability of communities. By apprehending those responsible for the illicit arms trade, the Nigerian Army has taken a significant step towards maintaining peace and security in the region.

The successful operation serves as a reminder that the fight against criminal networks involved in the smuggling of arms requires a multi-faceted approach. It involves intelligence gathering, robust security measures, and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the general public. The Nigerian Army’s ability to intercept this significant cache of ammunition demonstrates its preparedness and determination to tackle the various security challenges faced by the country.
