England captain Harry Kane has urged the country to build on their 2018 World Cup outing after losing 2-1 to Croatia in the semi-final on Wednesday.

The Tottenham striker is hoping that the feat does not go down as one of those one-off successes and wants the country to build on the gains made in the competition.

“This has got to be the start of something rather than the end of it,” Kane told Skysports.  “We have built a solid foundation over a two-year period with the manager and it is so important we carry this on and continue to show we can do well in these major tournaments.”

He lauded the youthfulness of the English side, saying, “We know we have restored pride in the England shirt, back home as well, so we can hold our heads up high.

“All we can say is we are proud of each other. When you look at our squad, how young it is and the fact the manager has only been in charge for two years, it is massive that we’ve had a good tournament and restored the pride of the nation.”
