Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have refused the request by the Anambra state chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to impeach Governor William Obiano.

The lawmakers said the request cannot be acquiesced to as the petition was placed by a non-lawmaker and a member of the opposition party too.

Chief Ken Emeakaye, the factional state chairman of the PDP, had on Sunday called for the impeachment of the Governor on grounds of constitutional breaches.

He alleged that the governor left a power vacuum for over 30 days. He is said to have left the country for upwards of a month without notifying the House of Assembly nor officially handing power over to the Deputy Governor to act in his stead.

According to Chugbo Enwezor (Onitsha-south), the request was ill-conceived and portrayed the PDP chairman as a person who has no understanding of the provisions of the law regarding impeachment.

He said: “That statement was ill conceived and came from somebody who does not understand the constitutional provisions of section 188 (1-11) and section 190 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

“First and foremost, he lacks knowledge of the law. The call is mischievous and should be discountenanced.”

Enwezor said no legislature embarks on impeachment proceedings of the governor on the promptings of an opposition party nor does the Assembly require a petition before impeachment proceedings against the governor are started.
