Weightlifter Edidiong Umoafia Wins Triple Gold at 2023 African Games

Nigerian weightlifter Edidiong Umoafia emerged as the star of the 2023 African Games in Ghana, clinching three gold medals in a commanding display on Monday. Competing in the men’s 67kg category for the first time, Umoafia dominated the podium with remarkable performances in snatch, clean & jerk, and total weight lifted.

Umoafia’s strength was on full display as he lifted 135kg in the snatch and 165kg in the clean & jerk, accumulating a total weight of 300kg. His stellar performance not only secured three gold medals but also propelled Team Nigeria to a total of 10 gold medals across Badminton, Wrestling, and Weightlifting events.

This triumphant feat significantly enhances Nigeria’s standing in weightlifting, elevating the nation’s medal count to eight in the sport. The weightlifting competition, which commenced on Sunday at the University of Ghana, Legon, witnessed King Kalu securing two bronze medals and Favour contributing two silver medals and a bronze to Nigeria’s tally.
