The Super Eagles number one shirt is up for grabs as the trio of Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and Dele Alampasu has been told to fight for it ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria.

The team’s manager Gernot Rohr made the submission on the back of the injury to Eagles’ first choice, Carl Ikeme, who is out of the game.

A hip injury in a game of Wanderers

Ikeme, who plays for Championship side, Wolverhampton, was taken off with a hip injury last weekend in their 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers.

And Rohr, who spoke through the team’s media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, has invited Akpeyi to fill up the vacuum.

Worry less

Nigerians shouldn’t worry much as the available goalkeepers are also good enough to deny the Algerians any goal. That is according to the German.

”Akpeyi would not get automatic shirt for the Algeria tie. He would fight for a place with the other two goalkeepers in the team.

”You should realize that the goalkeeping department is technical, so, we cannot afford to manage Ikeme for the qualifier.

The Super Eagles Media Officer further said: “Rohr is not happy over the development. But there is nothing anybody can do at this moment.’’

Ibitoye then disclosed that the German will be in attendance when FC Ifenayi Ubah go head-to-head with Nasarawa United in the 2016 Federation Cup final in Lagos.
