The Senate has passed the bill seeking the establishment of North East Development Commission. This is to fast-track the development of the troubled region.

The bill passed the third reading on Thursday after earlier disagreements over sources of funding and location of headquarters.

The Senate approved that the Federal Government will allocate 3% of Value Added Tax collected for the next 10 years to the proposed commission for the rebuilding of the region. Also, thee headquarters will be in Borno State, worst hit by insurgency.

Chairman House Committee on Special duties, Murtala Nyako gave these recommendations today and was accepted by the House.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, remarked that the commission will help address humanitarian challenges in the North East.

The bill will be transferred to the House of Representatives for consent and then to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.
