Senate President Bukola Saraki, has, today, read the letter from the Presidency seeking the confirmation of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Onnoghen has been in office in an acting capacity since November 10, 2016 when his predecessor, Mahmood Mohammed, retired.

The FG has been under intense pressure to confirm him as his acting tenureship drew to a close.

The Senate would, however, not be debating the request.

After the reading, the Senate was adjourned in honour of the late member of the House of Representatives from Katsina State, Hon. Bello Sani.

If confirmed, he would be the nation’s first CJN from the South in 30 years. The last was Sir Darnley Alexander (1975-1979).
