Public Sector: We Need Most Qualified Citizens, Says Saraki
Senate President Bukola Saraki wants the nation to create a system which allows her most qualified citizens man the public sector.
Saraki made the call while presenting the keynote address at the inaugural National Chevening Alumni Leadership Summit.
The summit was organised by the British High Commission and the Nigeria Chevening Alumni Association in Lagos.
Award for exceptional individuals
The Chevening scholarship is awarded annually by the UK Government to outstanding individuals. These are people who possess exceptional leadership potentials. And the scholarship helps them run a one-year master’s degree in any university in the United Kingdom.
Nigeria’s case different from the world
Saraki said while most countries across the world allow their best brains run the public sector, Nigeria’s is different. In the country, the most qualified people struggle to join the private sector.
According to him, the practice must change for the good of the country. He then called on the awardees to partner with government in nation building.
Invites educated, skilled Nigerians
“The back door, that is by appointment or through the front door, by standing for election, the most educated and skilled people should take over governance and help to convert the numerous God-given resources to genuine development for Nigeria and Nigerians.
“I wholeheartedly invite you to work with us in productive partnership so that we can journey together in this difficult but necessary task to build the Nigeria that we all wish for, for us and for our children,” Saraki said.
