The vice-president of terminal operations at the Dubai International Airport, Ali Angizeh, has announced the ban on irregular-shaped or oversized bags  from getting into Dubai, UAE starting from March 8.

This new policy implies that Nigerian travellers would not be allowed to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the popular ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags, as it becomes ”non-compliant baggage” due to the policy.

Oversized bags problem

According to Angizeh, the Dubai International Airport ”provides some of the most sophisticated baggage systems in the world,” but, he added, ”even the most technologically advanced systems can be disrupted by irregular shaped or oversized bags.”

He stated that bags that are round or do not have a flat surface of any kind ”are by far the largest source of baggage jams.”

The vice-president added that the jams could shut down sections of the system, delay baggage delivery to the aircraft and inconvenience the customers.

Re-pack for a fee

”We are trying to get the message out there as much as possible. Passengers, who show up at the airport with non-compliant baggage, will also be given the option to have it re-packed in boxes for a fee,” he said.

He added that airports had notified airlines operating into Dubai of the imminent change and had updated its websites to create more awareness.

According to the Daily Post, the DXB who are the agency in charge of handling baggages at the airport, handled approximately 9.3 million bags in January 2017.
