NiMET Collaborates With Mercy Corps On Climate

In continuation of it’s public sensitization on the use of weather and climate information, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency,NiMet, in collaboration with Mercy Corps, a non governmental organization, sensitized farmers and herders on the use of weather and climate information as tool in mitigating conflicts.

The two day event, which took place in Numan, Demsa, Girei, and Lamurde LGAs in Adamawa state had Meteorologists Ahmed Alfa Ibrahim and Abdulrahman Garba from Agromet Division of NiMet engage in robust interactive discussions with stakeholders including herders and farmers on causes of conflicts and measures to mitigate the farmer/ herder conflict.

In his speech, Mr. Emanuel Melaye the project Coordinator for Mercy Corps, disclosed that conflict between farmers and herders over competition for natural resources has intensified in the last decade largely as a result of climate change, noting that this sensitization couldn’t have come at a better time. He disclosed that they were glad to partner with NiMet in raising awareness and urged the participants to take advantage of the knowledge shared in order to improve farmers and herders relationship.

Mr Melaye also thank the Director General of NiMet, Professor Mansur Matazu for his support and hope for more collaborations in the future.
