A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Anthony Okonkwo, on Wednesday called on Nigerians to cut down on the consumption of livestock products to reduce the effects of methane on humans.

Concise News reports that Okonkwo made the call while speaking on “Reducing Business Risk through Good Environmental Stewardship’’ at the 2019 health safety and environment week organised by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) for its workers in Benin.

According to Okonkwo, livestock have the capacity of producing methane that helps trap down heat within the earth adding that methane is harmful to the body.

He explained that high levels of methane could reduce the amount of oxygen breathed from the air which could result in some health challenges.

“Emissions from livestock have become a significant source of atmospheric methane. In fact, domestic animals currently account for some percentage of the annual anthropocentric methane emissions.

“The essence of cutting down livestock is based on the premise that livestock in themselves produce methane.

“Methane is a green house gas and green house gas is one of the things that helps trap heat within the earth,” he said.

According to the don, we have to reduce livestock so that by extension we will be reducing methane gas which is one of the green house gases not good for the body.

The Professor, however, suggested the intake of Soya Beans and Beans in place of the livestock.
