Leicester Appeal Vardy’s Red Card
EPL defending champions, Leicester City, have appealed the red card shown to Jamie Vardy during Saturday’s game against Stoke City. His second in 2016.
The striker was sent off after his tackle on Mame Diouf was deemed dangerous by referee Craig Pawson who was being criticised for not punishing a two-footed challenge by Marcos Rojo during the midweek.
Vardy lifted both feet off the ground as he dived for the ball and connected with Diouf’s shin.
His manager, Claudio Ranieri, believes the referee was harsh in his judgement.
“He wanted to challenge and get the ball, not make a foul,” Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri said after the match, in which his side came from 2-0 down to earn a point.
Ranieri further said: “There was a big challenge between Johnson and Vardy. He touched the ball. Maybe it was (should have been) yellow.’’
Hughes agrees with referee
This view is not shared by Stoke City gaffer, Mark Hughes, who agrees with the referee’s decision.
The Club has subsequently made its case for an instance of wrongful dismissal and expects to hear the outcome of the appeal in the coming days.
If the appeal fails, Vardy will receive a three-match ban and miss the games against Everton, West Ham and Middlesbrough. This would come as a blow to their plans of reviving their season.
