Lassa Fever Kills 2 In Ogun; Govt Vows To Create Isolation Centres
Two health workers of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta have died of Lassa fever.
The victims, a nurse and a mortician, died after allegedly contracting the disease from a patient.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, the acting medical director of the hospital, Kehinde Hunyinbo, said the deaths were being investigated.
Government Reaction
In a swift reaction, the state commissioner for health, Babatunde Ipaye, called for calm. He assured the populace of the government’s readiness to combat the disease.
“We are going to immediately create an isolation centre here at FMC to cater for unexpected cases and emergency on public health issues like Lassa fever to include others communicable diseases. We have sent officers out to confirm the root cause of the cases,” he said.
He said this while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Abeokuta. He urged medical personnel to maintain hygienic and safe standards when treating patients.
Ipaye further added that a continuous sensitisation “is ongoing on the need for the public to keep maintaining a high sense of medical and personal hygiene’’.
