Lagos Commissioner Receives Report on Physical Planning, Building Control

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide has received the 2022/23 activity report of the Lagos State Physical Planning and Building Control Appeals Committee.

Speaking recently at the Conference Room of the Ministry, Olumide commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for inaugurating the committee in December 2020 as the first of its kind in the country to hear petitions about physical planning and building control infractions.

He expressed his willingness to work with the committee to sanitise the built environment sector for the benefit of all Lagosians.

“The responsibility on me as a Commissioner is to ensure effective registration of the built environment, improve the public rating of the physical planning family, and eliminate building collapse. The Physical Planning and Building Control Appeals Committee has a lot of role to play in making this achievable”, he said.

He urged the committee to give its activities the deserved awareness so that as many stakeholders as possible could access its services.

The Chairman of the Committee, Tpl. Ayodele Adediran, who highlighted the achievements of the committee, stated that the committee received 30 petitions from members of the public between 2022 and 2023, bordering on breaches in the system with some landmark decisions taken in favour of the petitioners.

He added that the committee as a quasi-independent body was capable of balanced and dispassionate consideration of issues to redress grievances and reduce unnecessary court cases.

Members of the committee, who are drawn from notable professional bodies in the built environment, include the former General Manager, Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, Tpl. Funmilayo Oshifuye, Arc. Abimbola Ajayi, Engr. Lawal Saliu and Builder Bayo Owojori amongst others.
