Joe Agi (SAN) has told the Department of the State Service (DSS), that President Muhammadu Buhari’s lawyer, Kola Awodein (SAN), gave Justice Adeniyi Ademola N500,000.
The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation is prosecuting Justice Ademola, his wife, Olabowale and Agi, on charges bordering on receiving and giving gratification to influence the course of justice.
Joe Agi, said Awodein paid the money to the judge in 2015, when the judge was presiding over the Buhari’s certificate case.
However, Agi said the sum of N500,000 paid to Ademola was not meant to be a bribe but a gift for the wedding ceremony of the judge’s daughter.
This was made known on Tuesday, when a DSS investigator, Babatunde Adepoju, was testifying before the court in Abuja.
While being cross-examined by the defence lawyers, Adepoju said that Agi had given the information to him during investigation of the case against the defendant.
Among the charges against the defendants, is an allegation that on Jan. 5, 2015, Justice Ademola “corruptly received” from Agi a BMW Saloon 320i valued at N8,500,000 through his son, Ademide, as gratification in the exercise of his official functions as a judge.
The prosecution also alleged that, through his wife, the Federal High Court judge received gratification of N30 million in three installments between March 11 and March 26, 2015.
Adepoju said that under interrogation Agi said the sum N30 million was the money contributed by his and Justice Ademola’s mutual friends for the judge’s daughter’s wedding ceremony.
