Governor Umahi Donates N.5m To Man Brutalised By Army Officers
In another chapter of the saga of the physically-challenged man violently harassed by officers of the Nigerian Army, Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, yesterday said the punishment meted out to the offenders is not enough.
He said this while receiving Uraku, the victim of the attack, who is also a native of Ebonyi state.
The governor opined that the demotion and 21-month imprisonment does not equal the beating meted out to Uraku.
He said: “This young man’s encounter with the army was very dehumanizing. The behaviour of the two soldiers was so terrible. They behaved as if they have no fear of God in their hearts. I’m sure many of you did not watch that video but for those who watched it, even if he is not our brother and he is a human being, you must feel the way we are feeling. I suggest that those two soldiers be sacked and prosecuted.”
He, however, commended the Army’s quick response to the dastardly act.
He also commended the governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, who had sought to rehabilitate Uraku, before the Ebonyi state government sent for him.
Umahi donated N500,000 to Uraku for his treatment and directed his Special Adviser on Religion and Welfare, Rev. Fr. Abraham Nwali, to take custody of the physically-challenged man and see ways by which government could rehabilitate him.
Chijioke Uraku was beaten by two officers of the Nigerian Army for wearing camo-designed pants. The video of the incident went viral and sparked outrage and calls for the punishment of the men who beat him.
The Nigerian Army immediately swung into action and via its social media handles, showed that the men had been arrested and said their actions are not representative of the force. They went further and called Uraku over to make amends for the actions of its men.
