Give Us Fishing Tools, Fishermen in Rivers Tell NDDC

Fishermen in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State have appealed to the Niger Delta Development Commission to provide them with fishing tools to improve their job.

The fishermen made the appeal through residents of Sangama on Sunday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

One of them Pius Obele disclosed that fishermen in the community needed the tools, including boats and fishing gears, to improve their job efficiency.

Obele noted that lack of fishing implements had affected the operation of the fishermen and had led to inadequate supply of fish to the people of the area.

On his part, Manners Owus said that if  the NDDC supplied the materials, it would encourage more people in the area to go into fishing thereby reducing unemployment in the community.

Owus then urged the commission to grant the people’s request as part of efforts in the diversification of the nation’s economy.

For Ada James, supplying fishing gears to Sangama people by the commission would mean more jobs for indigenes.

NDDC asked to register presence in the area

James added that there was no presence of  the NDDC in the community. But he noted that by providing the fishing implements, the commission would have registered its presence in the area.

Another resident, Francis Soala, lamented that the NDDC had not provided any infrastructure for the people of Sangama since the commission was established.

He did say that the commission had been executing projects in many communities in the state, but had not sited any in Sangama.

Soala then appealed to the commission “to register its presence in the community for the first time by providing fishing gears for our people’’.
