FIBA Africa: Kano Pillars, First Bank Retain Titles
Nigeria’s Kano Pillars and First Bank basketball clubs have retained their men and women’s titles at the 2016 FIBA Africa Zone Three Club Championships, which ended Sunday in Lome, Togo.
Both teams, including runners-ups Customs of Nigeria, and Etoile Filante of Togo, will represent the zone in the men’s and women’s FIBA Africa Club Champions Cup later this year.
The women’s championships will hold in Mozambique from November 26 to December 4 while the men’s tournament takes place in Egypt from December 8 to 17.
Solid Pillars cruise to title
Pillars were unbeaten as they defended their title in style. They defeated the five other teams in the men’s competition to qualify for their third consecutive ACC finals.
The Kano-based side overcame Elain Sportif Club of Benin Republic 90-75 before defeating AS Modele of Togo 82-48.
The holders brushed aside Customs 80-60 before netting more points than AS NIGELEC, 71-47, and ASPAC of Benin Republic on Saturday.
First Bank in championship form
In the women’s category, First Bank were also unbeaten. The Elephant Girls beat STT SC of Niger Republic 104-38 in the first round.
They also overcame Etoile Filante of Togo 74-43 in their first match before defeating them 68-39 in the second match on Saturday.
