The Campaign for Democracy has accused the Federal Government of abandoning ex-Vice President Alex Ekwueme, saying it caused his death.

Ekwueme died on November 20 in a London hospital.

Recall that the Government had directed that Ekwueme be flown abroad for treatment.

“By the virtue of section 180 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigerian, as amended, his medical bills must be taken care of by the Nigerian government,” the group’s spokesman Uzor Uzor said in a statement.

“So, when the former Vice President heard that his bills were not going to be footed by the government, he felt disappointed by a country he laboured for and collapsed and died; that was what led to his death.”

Uzor also said, “He died as a result of federal government’s abandonment.

“So federal government of Nigeria should be blamed for his death. He was a man who had been taking care of himself since he left office, very content and not disturbing successive governments in the country for any benefit.

“They should have allowed him to take care of himself like he had been doing over the years both in and outside Nigeria. Why must federal government get involved this time, only to abandon him where they had taken him and allowed him to die there?”
