FG Eyes Relocation of Ikoyi Correctional Centre

The federal government is contemplating the relocation of the Ikoyi Correctional Centre and other similar facilities nationwide, according to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The minister made the announcement during a visit to the Ikoyi prison in Lagos on Monday.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that urbanisation has significantly encroached upon the prison, rendering its current location unsuitable. “There is no reason for this facility to still be here,” he stated, emphasizing the pressing need for a change.

He pointed out that the prison lacks an adequate “buffer zone” as required by the constitution, making its continued operation in the current location a concern. Describing the Ikoyi prison as “a security threat,” Tunji-Ojo underscored the potential risks posed by the facility’s proximity to densely populated urban areas.
