Ashley Williams struck a late winner to hand Arsenal their first defeat since their opening match of the season as Everton fought back to win 2-1.

The north Londoners, who had won their last three games, went in front through Alexis Sanchez. The goal came via a deflected free-kick after an impressive start.

But the Toffees restored parity just before half-time when Seamus Coleman glanced home Leighton Baines’ excellent cross.

Everton take control

Encouraged by a vocal crowd, Everton took initiative of the game. And it was just a matter of time before Williams powered home a late header to round off the comeback.

But the Goodison Park side were reduced to 10 men as captain Phil Jagielka was sent off in the dying minutes for a second bookable offence.

The Toffees would later escape a late fight back as the Gunners had two shots cleared off the line.

First league defeat since August

Eventually, Arsenal failed to prevent a first league defeat since August, leaving them three points behind leaders Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Everton are up to seventh, four points behind fifth-placed Tottenham.
