Court Jails Man For Stealing Vehicle Parts

An Ogudu magistrates’ court in Lagos State has sentenced a man to six months in prison for allegedly stealing vehicle parts from the premises of 1st BRT Bus at Ojota, and admitted the other offender to a bail of N25, 000 with two sureties.
Oladipo Omolewo, 45, of Kogberegbe Street, and Michael Sunday, 27, of Abayommi Street, in Ojota, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ihiehie Lucky told the court that the offences were committed on Oct. 27 at Ojota.
He said the complainant, an Operation Manager of the 1st BRT Bus, reported the incident at the Ogudu Police Station.
He further stated that members of the community had in the last one month informed the authorities that some unscrupulous elements had invaded the premises to vandalise the buses.
One of the accused, Omolewo, who claimed to be a scavenger, unlawfully entered the BRT premises and vandalized some buses.
“He has has been vandalizing the buses, removing radiators, turbo chargers, injectors, propellars, block engines, fuel pumps to sell them.
“He was caught in the premises with radiators and block engines and was immediately handed over to the police.
Security guards on duty
“Sunday was caught holding a big stick in the premises by security guards, who beat him before handing him over to the police.”
The offences contravened Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The first accused pleaded guilty to the offence, while the second accused pleaded not guilty.
The judgement
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, sentenced Omolewo to six months imprisonment and admitted Sunday to a bail of N25, 000 with two sureties.
The sureties, she said, should show evidence of tax payment to the government.
The court adjourned the case to Nov. 23 for trial of the second accused.
