Council Boss Decries Dearth of Teachers In Zamfara

Zamfara state is suffering from a shortage of teachers. The students are available but there are not enough teachers to go round.

This is sharply felt in Birnin-Magaji Local Government Council where the chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Umar, has decried the shortage of teachers in primary schools in the area. He said this at the occasion of the 60th anniversary ceremony of Dan’ali Maude Primary School, Birnin-Magaji.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by the school’s old boys association to honour deserving teachers, old students and important personalities who contributed to the development of the school.

The chairman, going on, said the shortage also extends to school materials such as furniture, books and teaching materials. Goverment effort, though laudable, has been inadequate in solving the teacher problem.

Their efforts were commended by the Chairman who assured them of continual support from the local government council.

He further urged all stakeholders to support government’s efforts to provide education to the people, saying “education is a collective responsibility, therefore every one of us has a vital role to play to improve it”.

Government Response

In reply to the issues of teacher shortage brought up by Alhaji Umar, the Chairman of the state Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Alhaji Murtala Jangebe, said that the state government was making arrangements to employ 1,000 teachers to tackle the problem of inadequate teachers in primary schools across the state.

“We are aware of this problem and we are making efforts to tackle it; last week, we had a meeting with the state governor about this issue,” he said.

The SUBEB chairman also enjoined teachers in the state to be dedicated in the discharge of their duties and appealed to all stakeholders to support government’s efforts in the education sector.

On his part, the Emir of Birnin-Magaji, Alhaji Ahmad Umar, said that the emirate would continue to support any programme that would improve the education and development of the people of the area.

He commended the people of the emirate for their efforts to ensure the development of education in the area and urged them to do more.
