The managing director of Lekki Gardens Estate, Richard Nyong, has been sued by the Lagos State Government over the death of 35 persons, who died after the collapse of a five-storey building under construction on Kushenla Road in Ikate Elegushi.

Kayode Oyekanmi, an assistant director in the State Ministry of Justice, said Nyong was charged alongside Taiwo Odofin, Omolabake Mortune, Mariuis Agwu, Sola Olumofe and Omotilewa Joseph.

A six-count charge bordering on failure to obtain approval for the collapsed building, and unlawful manslaughter contrary to section 75 of the Urban and Regional Planing and Development Law of Lagos State was brought against the defendants.

The charged was filed on Feb. 17, 2017 and has not been assigned a date for the arraignment of the defendants.

Akinwunmi Ambode, the state governor, had visited the site, where he reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting lives and properties of all citizens in the state.

He also pledged to get justice for those who lost their lives.
