China have appointed World Cup-winning coach Marcelo Lippi as their national team’s new manager.

The 68-year-old World Cup-winning coach has a huge task of qualifying China for the Russia 2018 tournament.

Team Dragon currently lie at the bottom of Group A with just one point from four games in the Asian qualifying zone.

Lippi replaces Gao Hongbo, who resigned after China’s October 11 defeat to Uzbekistan.

The men’s national team have participated in just one World Cup, in 2002, and did not score a single goal.

The Italian is not new to Chinese football as he had previously managed a club in the country, Guangzhou.

The coach would earn £17 million a year after tax.
