The Anambra state House of Assembly has been asked to impeach Governor William Obiano by members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The request was made by the chairman of the state’s chapter of the PDP, Prince Ken Emeakayi, after a stakeholders’ meeting that held on Monday.

According to the chairman, the call for impeachment is based on allegations of constitutional breaches on the part of the governor. In light of this, they, the PDP, believe he is no longer fit to remain governor of the state.

He said the relevant security agencies have been intimated of the constitutional breaches carried out by the governor and the only recourse being an impeachment.

“We have written to the Police, DSS and other security agencies in the country to let them know that the governor is now acting illegally. We have duly notified the House of Assembly in separate letters on the breaches committed by the governor which are very clear.”

Obiano stands accused of creating a power vacuum for over 30 days. He is said to have left the country for upwards of a month without notifying the House of Assembly nor officially handing power over to the Deputy Governor to act in his stead.

Added to these, the Governor has refused to conduct local government elections.

However, Governor Obiano, through his Special Assistant on Media, Strategic Communication and Legislative Matters, Prince Oliver Okpala, has waved aside the threat of impeachment. He said the chairman has no locus standi as he might not even be the recognised chairman; a reference to the schism in the PDP.

He said: “Is he the proper person to speak or write any letter to the House of Assembly as state chairman of the party? Which side of the party does he belong, to the Ahmed Makarfi faction or the Ali-Modu Sheriff faction?”
