Ambode Opens 2016 Lagos Trade Fair
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has declared open the 2016 Lagos International Trade Fair. The theme for the fair is “Positioning the Nigerian Economy for Diversification and Sustainable Growth.”
In his remarks, he reiterated his government’s commitment to improving the business environment in the state. He said he will make the environment attractive to investors for the sustainable development of the state.
The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello.
According to him, government will continue to improve the business climate, attract more local and foreign. This he said would enable the state to achieve its goal of becoming Africa’s model megacity by 2025.
The governor said that the state has consolidated efforts on traffic decongestion, street lighting, road construction and rehabilitation across the state.
Furthermore, he noted that security apparatus was being enhanced, to enable it to effectively discharge its duties.
Trade Fair To Promote Investments
Similarly, the governor said the theme is for investments, create job opportunities and increase productive capacity in the state. He added that the theme would address urgent issues that would facilitate the positive transformation of the economy.
He said that the government would partner with the LCCI in its advocacy for policy consistency. Also, alignment of fiscal and monetary policies geared towards addressing the impediments to industrialisation, trade and Investment.
“I will like to reaffirm that we shall not relent in our efforts, knowing so well that the task of achieving the goal of sustainable trade and industrial development is by no means an easy task.
“Rather, it thrusts upon us the challenge of evolving sound policies that will stand the test of time and also generate the much needed roadmap for our journey to economic prosperity.”.
NACCIMA Tasks Governor On Permanent Trade Fair Ground
Meanwhile, President, National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Dr Bassey Edem, added his voice. He urged the government to facilitate and fast track the establishment of a permanent trade fair ground.
He further noted that government’s support would create a platform for investors and stakeholders to display opportunities inherent in diversification for economic expansion.
Similarly, President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mrs Nike Akande also explained the theme of the fair. She said it was chosen to ensure the urgent need for diversification, enabling business environment and increased foreign direct investment.
She said that the dwindled oil price was a wakeup call for government and the private sector to shift attention to the non-oil sector.
According to her, the non-oil sector embodies inclusive growth, a stable economy and sustainable development.
Akande urged the government to tackle impediments to investments, adding that it would facilitate GDP growth, increased investment and improved product competitiveness.
