Akwa Ibom Gov Unveils Major Welfare, Agricultural Initiatives on May Day

During the May Day celebrations of 2024 at Uyo Township Stadium, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State unveiled several initiatives aimed at boosting the welfare of state workers and promoting food security.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Eno highlighted the recent disbursement of over 16.1 billion Naira in gratuities to retired workers, with an additional 2 billion Naira approved last month to further support the retired workforce. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of its employees through various initiatives.

In a major announcement, the Governor declared that every first and third Friday of the month will be dedicated to farming activities. This move is part of the state’s strategy under the ARISE Agenda to achieve food sufficiency. These days will be work-free, allowing public sector workers to engage in agricultural endeavors, thereby contributing directly to the state’s food security efforts.

“We are rolling up our sleeves to bolster our food security,” Governor Eno stated, urging everyone to participate actively in the newly designated farm days.

Furthermore, Governor Eno outlined ongoing projects and schemes that focus on improving the lives of workers across the state. These include refunds for outstanding amounts in the contributory pension scheme, promotions for deserving employees, and the development of affordable housing projects. He also mentioned significant infrastructure improvements, such as the construction of the 3rd Ring Road, aimed at enhancing connectivity and transportation for the state’s workforce.

Regarding compensation, the Governor reassured workers that the state would promptly implement any new directives from the federal government concerning the minimum wage, ensuring fair and equitable compensation.

Governor Eno concluded his address by thanking the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their support and solidarity. “Your recognition of our efforts fuels our determination to do more for the people of Akwa Ibom State,” he said, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to elevating the quality of life for all workers and residents of the state.
