US-based Alex Nwora is the new head coach of Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) announced Wednesday.

Nwora will take charge of the African champions as they seek to retain the Afrobasket title this year.

The next Afrobasket Championship is scheduled to hold from September 8 to September 18 in Senegal and Tunisia.

NBBF president Musa Kida said that Nwora was, among other factors, hired based on his experience on the continent.

The new handler of the D’Tigers managed Cape Verde in the 2013 edition of the Afrobasket Championship, where the island nation defeated Nigeria 79-76.

“There is no point giving our national team jobs to expatriates when we have Nigerians all over the world who are qualified to get the job done,’’ Kida said.

He further said the team would begin preparation for the tournament on 12 August.
