70-yr-old Herbalist Docked For Defrauding 2 Brothers Of N18m

The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 70-year-old herbalist, Alidu Afolabi, in an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly defrauding two brothers of N18 million.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Afolabi, a herbalist from Aba Paanu, Ilebu area of Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Ogunremi, told the court that Afolabi fraudulently obtained the sum from two brothers, Rasheed Alimi and Dauda Alimi.

“Afolabi collected the money from the two brothers who allegedly wanted Afolabi to perform money-making rituals for them. He also did so under false pretence to double the money for them,” Ogunremi said.

The prosecutor alleged that the herbalist committed the offence sometimes in April at about 10.00 a.m. He committed the offence at Ado’s Compound, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, where he was a tenant.

Contravention of the law

Ogunremi said the offence contravened section 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, therefore granted the accused bail in the sum of nine million naira with two sureties in like sum.

Richard said one of the sureties must be a blood relation and civil servant on Grade Level 09. The second surety must have landed property with Certificate of Occupancy.

The magistrate adjourned the case till November 21.
